Summary Overview: Thumbscale
Because the theme is a reiteration of Peter's concerns for the near future, I took another deep dive into the human/Divine nature of the Church... that making Disciples is an inter-generational communion in which the "new birth" is like breathing in 'The Spirit' as naturally as our 1st birth emerges from a union of love, the 1st breath dramatically and necessarily unfolds in the process, unless a still-birth.
II Peter 2: 12-15
So Peter, as the end of his life nears, is urging them to respond deeply to his life's Story.. because the days of Roman persecution are upon us.
Discuss your students own experiences in leading someone to Christ..
Q: Was it more like a three point basket ball hoop shot from outside the perimeter or a relational journey over some time?
II Peter 2: 16-18
Peter is emphasizing that his Jesus narrative is 1st hand experience & is trustworthy.
A) Read my own short story on The Transfiguration.
Discuss: Q: Have you ever felt a moment of absolute awe... or mystery or terror before God?
B) Discuss why only 3 Disciples were chosen for the transfiguration.
C) Q: Would Jesus have chosen you? (May illicit Interesting self-disclosures).
T: Teaching Moment centered around the idea that the Church is impactful because both the Jewish & Christian communities were exilic and composed of current and former slaves.
II Peter 2: 19-21
T: Imagine with your students you all are 6 of the remaining signers of the U.S. Constitution gathered in a Pub.. What would we talk about?
Likewise: imagine we are Luke, John Mark, Peter, Matthew, Luke, John & Mary gathered in one place, what would be the conversation?
T: K, the issue for these Apostles was: Will this new communal child take hold? Will the Church make it past the 1st generation of witnesses (sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell) to the 2nd n 3rd generations (community experience, memory, imagination)
Read I John 1: 1-5.
T: John is certain that what they have seen, tasted, touched, heard, saw in Jesus was a relationship in which his students could enter through their testimonies.
Closing:
Paul says:"You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts & read by everyone".
T: This is the real purpose of Scripture;. to jump off the printed page and through our community into the whole world.
Q: So, if you are each approaching the latter seasons of your life, what are we going to do to make sure that in our "departure someone will remember these things"?
